This gameplay teaser presents the latest development progress of BABA YAGA: Whisper of the BOOM, a stylized action-adventure game inspired by Slavic folklore, developed entirely by me in Unreal Engine 5.
As a solo developer, I am responsible for all aspects of the project, including game design, programming, technical art, visual effects, art direction, level design, and implementation. This update focuses primarily on the areas that currently define the game's visual identity: Technical Art, Art Direction, and VFX.
The project explores the intersection of gameplay readability and atmospheric world-building through a combination of stylized visuals, procedural techniques, and reactive environmental systems. A significant part of the recent development has been dedicated to creating effects and tools that support both the artistic vision and gameplay experience.
Highlights featured in this teaser include:
- Niagara-based real-time visual effects.
- Custom materials and shader development.
- Post-processing effects
- Interactive and reactive environmental elements.
- Stylized destruction and magical impact effects.
- Gameplay-driven visual feedback systems.
- Procedural and shader-based world details.
- Cohesive art direction inspired by Slavic mythology and folklore.
My technical art workflow focuses on building scalable, reusable systems that allow visual complexity without sacrificing iteration speed or performance. Many of the effects shown are designed as modular solutions that can be expanded and adapted throughout production.
While this video showcases the project as a whole, it particularly reflects my approach to Technical Art-bridging gameplay systems, visual storytelling, and real-time rendering to create a distinctive and immersive player experience.
